TITLE: Certified Health Nurse
EMPLOYMENT TERMS: 0.75 FTE / 9-month
SALARY CLASSIFICATION: Classified
GENERAL STATEMENT of RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assess and/or treat students and staff members as they come into the Health Center; assist in creating a climate of health and well-being by assuring a caring, confidential, and understanding environment while organizing, keeping, and updating records on students and staff.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES:
- Assesses and treats ill students and staff members.
- Maintains a physical environment that meets the health needs of students and staff.
- Maintains records of active and non-active student immunization but the District Nurse files immunization reports with the State as required by law.
- Coordinates health screenings, follow up, and referrals
- Must possess the ability to deal effectively with matters of confidentiality
- Must use own initiative and judgment in performing job
- Ability to communicate and work well with staff, students, and parents
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Registered Nurse certificate or Licensed Practical Nurse certificate.
- First Aid Training and CPR Certificate.
- School Nurse Endorsement, preferred.
- One to Three years’ experience in School District setting, preferred.
- Must be able to push, pull or life up to 50 pounds
- Must possess basic math, language/reading, and writing abilities
- Must posses a warmth and understanding for special needs students
- Must possess ability to operate adaptive devices for special needs students
- Must possess a thorough knowledge in the use of standard office machines and personal computers.
OCCUPATIONAL CONDITION:
Medium risk - Work is routinely performed both indoor and outdoor environments, including exposure to noise and being on your feet for extended periods of time. Requires standing in inclement weather including summer heat.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains records of active and non-active student immunization but the District Nurse files immunization reports with the State as required by law.
- Works with Life Skills learners, including Multi-Handicapped students and students at risk for seizures
- Accesses highly confidential information and maintains confidential classroom student files and records
- Recognizes when a student is not feeling well (both verbal and non-verbal students_ and provides basic first aid, as needed
- Coordinates health screenings, follow up, and referrals.
- Coordinates services with outside health providers, i.e., Rural Health, Lions Vision Center, Healthy Kids Dental, doctors’ offices, and EMTs as appropriate.
- Communicate health symptoms and recommendations to parents as appropriate.
- Notifies the Principal and proper authorities of special problems involving students.
- Manages medical emergencies.
- Performs basic office procedures, and other related tasks as assigned by Site Supervisor.
- Trains and supervises student assistants.
- Files reports of suspected abuse/neglect if initial contact person.
- Maintains medical inventory and utilizes supplies in a cost-effective manner.
- Completes student and employee accident reports and health insurance forms.
- Must complete paperwork assigned in an efficient and timely manner
- Participates in continuing education, workshops, in-services, etc., to maintain proficient technical skills and continued professional growth.
- Must use own initiative and judgment in performing job
- Performs other related duties as assigned

EVALUATION PROCEDURE:
The evaluation is done by the Exceptional Student Services Director with input from site principals, in accordance with provisions specified in governing board policy.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
The Certified Health Nurse reports directly to the Exceptional Student Services Director.
