TITLE:                           1 on 1 Health Nurse

 

EMPLOYMENT TERMS:  0.75 FTE / 9-month position

 

SALARY CLASSIFICATION:  Classified

 

GENERAL STATEMENT of RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of a certified staff member, provide assistance, one on one, in the instruction of a specific student to maintain a well-organized and smooth functioning program.

 

PRINCIPLE DUTIES:

  • Works with Life Skills learners, including students with multiple disabilities and students at risk for seizures.
  • Feeds and changes diapers for Multi-Handicapped student
  • Positions student from wheelchair to chair, toilet, etc.
  • Assists student on and off the bus when necessary
  • Maintains student progress log and parent communication log
  • Maintains a physical environment that meets the health needs of the specific student and staff
  • Must possess the ability to deal effectively with matters of confidentiality
  • Must use own initiative and judgement in performing job
  • Ability to communicate and work well with staff, students, and parents

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Registered Nurse certificate or Licensed Practical Nurse certificate.
  • First Aid Training and CPR Certificate.
  • School Nurse Endorsement, preferred.
  • One to Three years’ experience in School District setting, preferred.
  • Must be able to push, pull or life up to 50 pounds
  • Must possess basic math, language/reading, and writing abilities
  • Must posses a warmth and understanding for special needs students
  • Must possess ability to operate adaptive devices for special needs students

OCCUPATIONAL CONDITION:

Medium risk - Work is routinely performed in indoor environments, including exposure to noise and being on your feet for extended periods of time. May be required to travel outdoors in inclement conditions to go from building to building for meetings or classes. The employee may be required to move from room to room through corridors heavily congested with people.

The applicant for this position is required to:

         

    • Stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
    • Lift on a regular basis 30-50 pounds
    • Exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus.
    • Hearing ability to monitor presence and activity of students and respond to communication with students and adults is required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works with Life Skills learners, including students with multiple disabilities and students at risk for seizures.res
  • Feeds and changes diapers for Multi-Handicapped student
  • Coordinates services with outside health providers, i.e. Doctors’ office and EMT’s as appropriate
  • Communicates health symptoms and recommendations to parents as appropriate
  • Notifies Principal and proper authorities of special problems involving students
  • Managers medical emergencies involving specific student
  • Completes student and employee accident reports and health insurance forms
  • Accesses highly confidential information and maintains confidential classroom student files and records
  • Is aware of specific student’s special needs, physically, dietary, etc.
  • Works with students who need therapy, i.e. OT, PT, Speech, etc.
  • Recognizes when a student is not feeling well (both verbal and non-verbal students_ and provides basic first aid, as needed
  • Assists in the planning and participation of program activities and field trips
  • Attends student IEP meetings and parent conferences, as requested by the Exceptional Student Services Director
  • Must complete paperwork assigned in an efficient and timely manner (monthly logs and MIPS)
  • Communicates with teachers regarding the students’ needs and progress
  • Assists with medical needs of students
  • Monitors student’s conduct, alerts for emotional and physical conditions that may affect the safety and welfare of the student.
  • Must assist as Bus Aide as needed
  • Operates various types of lift mechanisms, depending on equipment installed.
  • Maneuvers heavy wheelchairs up ramps, over curbs, and around inside of bus without assistance
  • Must use own initiative and judgement in performing job
  • Participates in continuing education, workshops, in-services, etc., to maintain proficient technical skills and continued professional growth.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

EVALUATION PROCEDURE:

The evaluation is done by the Exceptional Student Services Director with input from site principals, in accordance with provisions specified in governing board policy.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

The 1:1 Health Nurse reports directly to the Exceptional Student Services Director.
